Yesterday's Incident (2015 JAN 29)
« on: 30 Jan 2015 - 05:05:12 »
As some of you may know, for the last 2 months or so we have been battling a hacker that was somehow redirect Android users.

I contacted our hosting tech support and we thought we had the situation resolved approximately 2 weeks ago. A few days ago, it was brought to my attention that the problem had resurfaced and anyone accessing the site on an Android device would be redirected.

Yesterday morning I implemented a full security sweep including changing the password that the forum software uses to access it's database. Immediately following that sweep our forum went off line.

I spent yesterday and a good part of the night rebuilding our site, talking with tech support, analyzing server logs and basically getting us back up and running. To the best of our knowledge, the vulnerability that this hacker exploited was in one of the two old themes we were still trying to support. As a result with the move to a new URL, and new database name and password, we have removed those themes permanently. For those of you who were using them because you prefer a darker theme, we have not forgotten you and will get a Darker theme made in the new style as soon as possible.

Site functionality and security has to take priority.

As a result of all of this, we have lost some functions that I am looking to replace as soon as possible. As for data/posts, if we have lost any, it would only be the last couple of days worth. A Database restore from server back ups was necessary unfortunately.

In addition, most Avatars and attachments to posts should remain, however if you find some missing, simply edit the post and reupload them if at all possible.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and thank you for your patience and understanding.

I wondered if we'd had a breach... glad to hear it wasn't as bad as I thought it may be.  I will look forward to those dark themes though.  My eyes are already bleeding, from all the brightness :P

So you know, I have noticed 3 posts that are changed.   No big deal but if you need to know.

First was my initial post on Scott Walker.  It has moved from being the start in a thread to the second reply.  Initial post is there but what I typed in has gone blank.  It is also moved as noted.

On my thread regarding the comet impact it is down to 3 replies.  IIRC there were closer to 6-8.

On the current last page of the thread about the the CCW guy in FL one of my posts is there but blank.

Like I said this is not an issue.  You keep this place clean, dry and nice.  But I want you to know in case it gives you info you need to fight/run/admin/clean up/protect or whatever. If no help on anything ignore it.

Copy that. Some data loss was inevitable once a Database restore became necessary. However, if that's the worst of it I'll consider us lucky and move on. Heh.

I wondered if we'd had a breach... glad to hear it wasn't as bad as I thought it may be.  I will look forward to those dark themes though.  My eyes are already bleeding, from all the brightness :P

Copy that. I will get a real dark themes up as soon as possible. In the mean time, you can try the grey theme,... it's darker than the colors ones, though not as dark as the ones you're no doubt used to.

Not sure if you saw my email, but I did try changing to the grey theme earlier today.  After I selected it the whole forum was blank, lol.  I guess you reset everyone to this curve theme we're on now? Anyway, whatever you did fixed it.  I can live with this until we get a dark theme going.

A new, possibly temporary, dark theme is installed for those of you want it. I may work on it later to bring a bit more inline with the rest our format, but the dark coloring won't change.

I just reinstalled Tapatalk. Give it 30 minutes for their servers to detect the changes and try again.

After playing with various settings for the last several minutes, I have discovered you may need to remove USS from your forum list inside Tapatalk and re-add. This is probably a result of the forum being moved to a different URL than when we first registered with Tapatalk.

My Android app wasn't working either, until I removed the forum and re-added it, now it works fine.

Ah delicious darkness.... my eyes thank you good sir.

Most welcome. I may or may not be changing the gold coloring on that one to something a little flatter and more "us". Haven't decided yet. If people like it, I may just leave it as long as we don't get any conflicts.

I'm not really feeling the gold, so you're welcome to change it :P  I don't know if I have a screenshot of what the old one looked like or not, but the color pallet on that one looked good I thought.

The old one was a dark charcoal gray and blue.

I used the one that's there now as is because it was quick and easy and I know some members have vision issues with brighter coloring.

I'll look into changing the gold to a blue shade here in a bit. Still chasing minor bugs and issues.

lol

The forum has been under a major spam attack over the last month. We have removed hundreds of spam accounts from russian servers. I wonder if this is connected.

That seems to be the case. As soon as I cut off access permanently, the site went down.

I believe this is the case.

There is a rumor going around that The Truth About Guns had a similar spam attack around the same time.

Did some modding on the Dark theme today to more closely resemble what we had before. I will do a new Dark theme in same style as the rest eventually but this should hold those that need dark over until then.

Enjoy!

Well whatever happened - it booted me off the forum for @ 4 days.....Heck of a thing - I tried many different passwords until I got the right 1 for the site...Thats the only problem with changing (security reasons) it - or just too many sites involved and never writing down the password(s).

Ya, not much we can do to help you remember passwords. We can completely reset it though is the forgotten password function doesn't work for you for some reason. Let us next time, we have options to help.
